After Amy Schumer posted a video of Martin Luther King Jr. stating that Israel “has the right to exist” and that he would “take a stand against anti-Semitism because it’s wrong, it’s unjust, and it’s evil,” amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, his daughter Bernice King has corrected the comedian.
“Amy: Certainly, my father was against anti-Semitism, as am I,” she wrote. “He also believed militarism (along with racism and poverty) to be among the interconnected Triple Evils. I am certain he would call for Israel’s bombing of Palestinians to cease, for hostages to be released… and for us to work for true peace, which includes justice.”
Bernice, who is the CEO of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, continued, “He said, ‘Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.’ We have much to correct.”
Alongside her statement, she referred Schumer to a video of her father voicing his support for a withdrawal from the Vietnam War and the importance of “moral power.” Bernice also encouraged the Trainwreckstar to read Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1967 book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?
“I mourn with all who are mourning,” Bernice wrote. “I know that we can’t afford to diminish and dehumanize each other if we are truly committed to ridding humanity of the Triple Evils and to freedom from oppression for all.”
More than 8,500 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis have died in the ongoing conflict, which began after Hamas’ terrorist attack on Oct. 7, the Associated Press reports.
